Hello everyone. Thought I’d take advantage of my new authorship with an intro post.

I’m a car guy, airline pilot, RC heli guy, dad, husband, and a dork. Current cars are an Outback (the winter beast and heli hauler), and a 2001 996 C4. My better half is more sensible and has an Odyssey for the kid and dogs.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

(Odyssey not pictured, I fell asleep even thinking about taking a picture of it).

SO anyway, those are my current cars. I’ve had the 996 for about a year now after wanting a 911 since 82 or so when my dad had a 911E, and that becoming my dream car. The 996 wasn’t the dream generation, but when looking at 964, 993, and 997 models, I enjoyed the driving experience of the 996 over the earlier cars, and the fact that it was a 911 at 50-70% off the cost of the other ones I looked at made the choice pretty easy.

The Porsche has some work I need to do to it once it warms up a bit. Back bumper has to come off, the muffler on the left side has a loud rattle in it, it’s the Porsche Sport Exhaust with the valve to make it loud, and they tend to break some of the internal welds causing the annoying sound. I’m going to take it to a shop and have them cut it open and fix it rather than pay Porsche the $1500 or so it would cost for a new box. While I’m back there I’m planning on doing the water pump, thermostat and maybe rebuild the SAI pump since it is getting a bit noisy.

No huge hurry on any of those, we’ve just gotten our 3rd noreast’er in 3 weeks and another is due next week here in the Live Free or Die state, so the 996 isn’t going on the road anytime soon.

So yeah. Hi. Glad to be here and be able to write after reading and commenting for so long.

Airline pilot? Neat. What do you fly? You’ll find that I spend an inordinate amount of time writing about airplanes . Welcome aboard!

Welcome to the cult club! Odysseys can be fun, at least at doing what they are designed for. Oppo seems to have a decent affection for ultrapractical mobiles. Just think of it as a giant wagon. I think they make for the best highway cruisers and road trip machines. While they don’t really look “the business” they certainly serve enough purpose to be respected.

I also have a two seater convertible and a Subaru as my vehicles of choice. Seems to make for a good combo. Although your Subaru probably gets better gas mileage and your two seater convertible is a bit faster lol.

Hmm. I suppose I fit into the 2 seater convertible and Subaru group too

Every time I drive the Odyssey I’m impressed, if I’m honest. The big girl can really hustle down a back road when pushed.

I’m a big Miata fan. I’ve had 2 NA generation cars, absolutely loved them. There’s been a bunch of times I’m out in the 911 and think that I should really just go buy another Miata instead. That car wouldn’t get me arrested at redline in 2nd gear.

Kinja'd!!!

That was a good day. My wife wouldn’t let me keep them both though.

That’s just what’s immediate. Last year I did cam chain pads, plugs, coils, plug tubes, IMS, RMS, front axles, battery and a bunch of interior stuff. It’s certainly not a cheap car, but it’s not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I’ve also got a hardtop, but mine doesn’t match. It was cheap off of eBay and figured why not, I enjoyed the 600mi road trip to get it.

Welcome! I can tell the Outback is a 2018, but what year and trim are the Odyssey?

Odyssey is a 2014 EX-L. It’s a nice van, got it used a couple years ago as a Honda CPO for a good price after our Jetta diesel wagon got bought back.

Welcome! Glad to have you with us! :D

My suggestion is to swap the Embraer for something a little more classy....a Lockheed Electra...DC3....Convair :P

Most of the work I’m doing is just follow up trying to tidy up my engine swap. I actually got my car from a fellow Oppo for free when he blew the engine in his car tracking it and wanted to wipe his hands of it. I swapped in a 3.2 boxster S engine with what I could see in the ad was an LN IMS bearing. I got it a year ago and got it on the road last fall but it’s been stored away for the winter. Unfortunately, I think even though I had the battery on a tender it may need a new one.

Newer Hondas are great cars. My mom has a 2016 CR-V EX and she loves it. It’s a better passenger car than my RAV4 and it has a ton of good features for the money, like smart key/push button start, LaneWatch, etc. MSRP was 28 and she got at least four grand off of it, too.

Agreed. I keep hoping for a Super Constellation slot to open up, but it never seems to pan out.

Lol I cant even get to highway speeds in second gear with the 6speed in mine. 52-54 is the top speed in 2nd vs about 60 with the 5 speed. So I am very used to using 3rd gear on any longer autocross course. But yes I definitely know what you mean there!

And given the choice between a Miata and a 911, id probably pick the 911 since just having that choice means I could easily purchase a Miata too at some point and just dedicate it to track car duty. I really loved the Cayman I drove, that was the only other car that really felt like it could replace the Miata without me complaining ever.

Oh, there’s no doubt the 911 is a hell of a car. I love it. I just wonder how long it’ll be before I get pulled over. One of the really great things is that it has that back seat. My wife is about 5’6” so my 10y/o fits fine behind her. Not exactly a practical family vehicle, but it’s fine for an hour or 2 for him back there. That’s one of the things that spelled the end of my Miata days, once he was born I just didn’t get to drive it very much with only 2 seats available. That’s actually why a Cayman wasn’t in the running. You can get a lot more Cayman than 911 for the same money, but my tortured logic could justify the 911 with the back seat as something we could all enjoy vs the Cayman where it’d just be me solo or with my son.

Haha I love that the 911 can be a practical “family car” that is just awesome. I have yet to drive one but always have thought I would own one some day. Hopefully before they become obscenely expensive. I would imagine most 911 models will appreciate in value eventually, especially if driverless cars become the norm.

I’ve been subtly telling my wife that a 991 is larger and would be an actual  practical vehicle for about 6 months now. I’m only slightly lying, the 991 is huge compared to my 996, I probably could use a C4 991 as my daily.

Basically, I can justify anything.
